40. What does that magic number bring you? Wisdom, patience, contentment? For me, it’s more like forgetfulness, ugh-really?!, and ooooo-kay (as in, questions - one after another)
You hear people say, “Your metabolism will slow down when you reach forty.” And you think, yeah right. Yeah, right! Two weeks after I turned forty, it changed. TWO WEEKS! Prior to forty years + two weeks, I could eat almost anything I wanted without a major problem. Or at least not one that couldn't be rectified with some work. As soon as that forty & two weeks mark hit, the pounds came on and stayed on. They’re not going anywhere. Whoever ‘they’ are who said your body changes at 40, ‘they’ aren’t kidding.
Next, is the hair. I realize this particular incident is not totally tied to the age of 40, but let’s face it, middle age hits and with it comes either a lot of hair dye or full-blown, all na-tur-al. My daughter told me the other day that I skipped gray and went straight to white. Just you wait, my dear. Just you wait.
Let’s not forget the hormones. As if we didn’t get enough craziness in our heads when we were teenagers, now we get to deal with those lovelies again at 40. They’re all out of wack, but on a whole new level. And bless the man who has both the teen and the 40-something year old wife living under the same roof. Remember, we love you…we promise.
And then there’s the dreaded gynecologist appointment. Yes, every gynecologist appointment is dreaded (although needed, so don’t skip yours), but the one right after you turn forty comes with a new sentence. “So, when would you like to schedule your mammogram appointment?” The ugh-really?! and ooooo-kay side of you wants to respond, “Uh, how about never?” But you take a deep breath, remembering 40 should also provide a touch of wisdom and make the appointment. You’re a grown up after all, middle age no less.
Wisdom, patience, and contentment? Yes, there’s that too. Maybe not a lot of it yet, but definitely a start and an ultimate goal. I’d rather have those qualities and if that means I’ve got to live a little, study God’s Word a lot, and pray without ceasing, it’s worth it. So, bring on the forties and thank the good Lord for those first forty years and for what is to come. The best is yet to be.
Gray hair is a crown of splendor…
