What's on your tree?
Are you one of those who has every kid ornament known to man hanging from the limbs? You know...the hand-printed ones pushed in plaster, the kindergarten school picture tucked within an angel's outline, or the half-painted star extending from a red ribbon. Or how about the kid ornament that doesn't belong to your kid, but to you? Is that kindergarten school picture tucked within an angel's outline actually you from 40 years ago? Check out those bangs! What was Mama thinking?!
How about the travel tree? An ornament from every single vacation...scratch that...outing...that takes you thirty miles from home. Oh, remember that one? That was the day little Johnny took his first step at Disney. And that one was the day Susie learned to swim at Uncle John's house. And let's not forget this one. That was the day you beat me down the slopes. Loser had to dye her hair purple. It didn't come out for a week!
The memory tree is similar to the handmade tree and the travel tree. Those are ornaments that spark memories - the sad, the funny, the sweet. It's the tiny stocking with your name written across the top, which used to hold a place of honor on your grandparents' mantel as decoration. It's the child figurine toppling over something invisible reminding you of that one time your brother was an idiot. He never should've hidden your present so deep in those tree limbs. And you never should've reached in that deep to get it. You can still see the Christmas tree falling in slow motion ... you with it.
A nativity tree - one that reminds you of the true meaning of Christmas. The ornaments on this tree have come from all over - Georgia, South Carolina, Peru. They are all beautiful, each with just the right amount of Oh, my. What a gorgeous picture of Jesus! But none more stunning than the wooden ones from Israel.
Finally, there's the souped up tree, as I like to call it. It's the Johanna Gaines or Martha Stewart tree. It's wrapped in a designer ribbon while purple and silver balls hang exactly two inches apart throughout. Sparkling snowflakes are also placed strategically and an enchanting angel guards the tree top.
Maybe you've had each of these types of trees over the years. Maybe you stick with one kind year after year. Or maybe you have a free-for-all tree. Whether your tree is one, all, or a combination, enjoy it. Let it bring a smile to your face. Let it remind you how much love went into filling your tree.
Merry Christmas, Friends! Sit back for a while. Look at your Christmas tree. Soak in those memories and twinkling lights. Know you are loved.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. ~John 3:16
